Room Information

Sizes of Rooms

The unique vertical nature of our campus lends itself to some of the best views of the city. As some of our buildings were not originally residence halls, it also allows for some uniquely shaped spaces. Rooms are square to rectangular in shape. All rooms have at least one window that varies in size. We are unable to provide dimension of specific rooms or windows due to the vast number of spaces on campus.

Electronic Access

Our residence halls are equipped with wireless internet access. To access the wifi, students must login to the network with their Emerson credentials. We not not have ethernet ports within the residence halls. Students also have the ability to utilize streaming television service, which is 100% wireless TV. Students can access the streaming service via mobile devices such as a smartphone, laptop, tablet or smart TV/device such as a ROKU, etc.

Furniture

All rooms designated as residence hall bedrooms come with a set of standard furniture per person:

  • a bed frame
  • XL twin mattress (36” x 80”)
  • desk
  • desk chair
  • closet or wardrobe unit with mirror
  • Under bed dresser

Furniture may not be removed from the room to which it is assigned. Students are responsible for any furniture lost or damaged over the course of the year.

Bed Frames

College bed frames are standard across campus. Emerson College does NOT allow bed frames to be raised with cinder blocks or stacked wood. Commercially manufactured bed raisers that allow an additional 6 inches of height are allowed.

Bedding

All of our beds are twin XL (36” x 80”), so you’ll need to purchase XL sheets, which can be found at various retailers. When packing for college, you may want to consider bringing sheet sets, a mattress pad, bed foam, extra pillowcases, pillows, and a comforter.

Refrigerators and Microwaves

Students are permitted to have a refrigerator and microwave, however we STRONGLY encourage students to rent one of our energy efficient Microwave/Refrigerator combo units from our vendor MicroFridge by Danby. These units are placed in student rooms prior to their arrival and picked up at the end of the academic year. If a student elects to bring their own units, microwaves can be up to, but not greater than 700 watts of cooking power and refrigerator and freezer combinations can be no larger than 3 cubic feet total.

Posters

To prevent damage to your posters and the walls, please use removable poster tape, putty, or removable adhesive squares.

Window Treatments

All windows are outfitted with shades. Curtains, tapestries, and other such wall hangings are not permitted.

Services and Staff

Maintenance Requests

Please report all requests for repairs in your own room or suite to Facilities Management. Any lock issues should be filed via work order and reported directed to your Residence Director. If the concern is an issue in a public area, please report it to your RA or RD.

Laundry Rooms

Each residence hall has its own laundry facilities available to students 24 hours a day. The laundry machines are activated by the Speed Queen App which allows students to view available units within their building.

Mail

During the academic year, packages and mail can be picked up in the Little Building Mailroom - which serves all on campus students. You will be informed via email when either a package or letter arrives for you. Letter mail can be retrieved Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Little Building Mailroom service window. Packages that are not oversized will be placed in lockers. Locker packages can be retrieved 24 hours a day.

Your mailbox information can be found under information and forms on your housing portal once a student has a housing assignment. Learn more about mail services and residence hall addresses.

If you are having an item delivered that is NOT a package processed through the Emerson College mailroom, such as meal or grocery deliveries, you MUST use the physical address of the building/Residence Hall where you are planning to meet the delivery person, not the mailroom address. Please make sure that you will be present and available for the estimated delivery time of the order and note that items left in the lobby unattended are considered abandoned property and may be disposed of.

Insurance

Emerson College shall not be liable or otherwise responsible in any way for the loss of or damage to a resident’s personal property. Residents are advised to check for possible coverage of personal belongings and other items under their parents’/guardians’/homeowners’ or renters’ insurance. Additional insurance for student property is recommended.

Residential Education Staff

There are professional staff and student staff members living in each residence hall on campus.

Resident Assistants (RAs) are student staff members that support the academic community in an undergraduate residence hall and have direct responsibilities for the residents on a floor(s) or in a section of the residence hall. The primary responsibilities of the RAs are to assist in community building, support student learning initiatives, act as a general source of support for the residents, respond to emergency situations, and foster an environment conducive to academic pursuit and personal development.
International Student Peer Mentors (also referred to as ‘ISPMs’ or ‘Mentors’) serve as live-in student staff resources to international students entering Emerson College to assist with international student transition. Mentors are familiar with Emerson and the various resources, activities, and programs the College offers and are responsible for connecting students to activities, resources, and programs relevant to individual international student mentees and their specific needs.

Residence Directors (RDs) are our professional live-in staff team. RDs are responsible for the overall management and development of a residential community and live on campus in the residential community they oversee. Along with their supervisory and administrative duties, they participate in a rotating duty schedule to respond to emergency situations in the residence halls after business hours.

Residential Welcome Desks

Each residence hall is equipped with a Welcome Desk, where students will need to confirm their identity whenever they enter the building by tapping their ID on our card reader. Desks are staffed 24 hours a day by both student staff and a professional security team. Students wishing to sign in visitors will need to first register them on their housing portal and then confirm their identity at the Welcome Desk in their community.
