Short-Term Individual Therapy

One-on-one counseling allows for a safe space to speak with a professional who can help you better understand your concerns and work with you to build skills to help overcome difficulties and have the best experience possible at Emerson College.

Group Therapy and Workshops

Group therapy can be a helpful addition or alternative to individual counseling. At Counseling Services, groups are free and confidential and you’re welcomed and encouraged to attend throughout your time at Emerson.

Psychiatric Medication

We offer limited psychiatric services, largely through a telehealth partner to Emerson College students. Counseling Services can also help students get connected with providers in the area that can discuss and prescribe psychiatric medication. For more information, please call us and let us know you are looking for referrals for medication. We will obtain information and make a plan to get you connected.

Consultation

Counseling Services staff are available to students, faculty, and staff for consultation regarding concerns about Emerson students, as well as matters related to student life and development. Consultation and training are provided for other campus resources, as well, including resident assistants and residence directors.

Outreach

Counseling Services believes in primary prevention so that we can address potential issues and inform Emerson students about mental health, coping skills, and self-care before issues become crises. We're happy to work with you or your student group to provide information sessions and other outreach. Presentations on stress management, relationships, college mental health, substance use, and much more are available.

If you'd like to work with Counseling Services on a presentation, please fill out the Outreach Request Form or email us directly at counselingservices@emerson.edu and a staff member will contact you. Staff usually require at least two weeks' notice to plan events and a month's notice to accommodate presentations after 5:00 pm.

Limitations & Fees

Limitations of Treatment

Counseling Services employs a short-term counseling model. If an assessment indicates that a student’s therapeutic needs are beyond the scope of what we are able to offer (e.g., expertise required or frequency of therapeutic contact indicated), the student will be given assistance in securing alternative off-campus therapeutic resources. We also provide a limited number of psychiatric appointments per week, largely through a telehealth partner. We are able to consult with students to help with off campus referrals based on individual needs.

Fees

Counseling services are free of charge to all full-time undergraduate students. Counseling services are also free for part-time undergraduate and graduate students who have paid the Student Health Fee.

Assistance with referrals for Emerson community members who are not eligible for services is also provided free of charge.
