Tax Information

Educational Tax Credits

The American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009 expanded tax benefits that may be available to your family. The IRS encourages you to save your receipts. Expenses paid for tuition, books, and course materials may be eligible to use to claim a tax credit.

For more information on the American Opportunity Credit, The Hope Credit, or the Lifelong Learning Credit, go to www.irs.gov.

Emerson College is not a tax advisor. Emerson College cannot provide tax advice so you may want to consult the IRS or a tax professional to find out more about the tax credit and your eligibility.

1098-T Statements

Emerson College produces 1098-T statements each January for students who paid for courses during the prior tax year. The 1098-T statements show payments when they are made, not based on what term they were intended for. For example: if you pay the Spring 2010 tuition on December 29, 2009, then the payment is reported on the 2009 1098-T statement even though it was "intended" for the Spring 2010 semester.

ECSI

Emerson uses an outside party called ECSI to produce and distribute our 1098-T statements. ECSI generates the 1098-T statement and mails it to the student 's permanent address on file with the College. The student is mailed the original form and given a PIN to be able to log into the ECSI website if he or she would like reprints of the 1098-T.

If you have questions about when the 1098-T was sent or how to use the ECSI website, call 866-428-1098.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding 1098-T

What types of payments are showing on the 1098-T?

Emerson calculates the total amount paid during the calendar year. Payments that are a result of loan disbursements, Tuitionpay payments, cash, check, credit card, and debit card payments are reported. We do NOT include grants, scholarship, tuition remission, etc. We put the calculated answer in box 1 of the statement.

I did not receive a 1098-T, why?

  1. If you did not have a Social Security number (SSN) on file with the College, then a 1098-T was not generated for you. Please contact the Student Service Center for assistance.
  2. If you did not update your permanent address with the College, then your 1098-T may have been sent to the wrong address. Please contact ECSI at 888-549-3274 to obtain a new copy.
  3. You did not make any qualifying payments; see #1.

If multiple people made payments to my student account, who gets the tax credit?

It is up to the student to decide which family member to give the 1098-T to and how much each person can claim. We cannot report who made the payments; we simply report payments received.

I think there is a mistake on my 1098-T; what do I do?

If you believe there has been a calculation error, please email your question to bills@emerson.edu. The email MUST come from your Emerson email account. Include your name, Emerson ID#, and a phone number where we can reach you.
