Writing, Literature & Publishing

Your gift is writing. You may have started out with a diary and then worked your way up to poems, essays, newspaper articles, or maybe even a novel. Now you want to immerse yourself in the craft and figure out how to parlay your gift into a career.

Why Emerson? Our Writing, Literature & Publishing program nurtures you as a writer, no matter where your creative interests lie. You get the chance to study a variety of forms, including fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and screenwriting, as well as different aspects of the publishing industry. Offering a stimulating range of literature courses, the curriculum also includes a strong liberal arts component. In addition, you can gain real-world experience through internships at Boston's many literary and publishing houses.

Your Emerson experience. At Emerson, you learn from the best — our faculty of accomplished writing and publishing professionals as well as writers and industry experts who come to speak on campus. You also learn with the best — your classmates. This eclectic community of writers, editors and publishers shares a passion for the written word. Together, you hone your craft in the classroom, in writing workshops, and in both formal and informal forums.

Ultimately, of course, the goal of a professional writer is to be published. Emerson's many campus publications make it possible to do just that. Just a few examples include Ploughshares, a nationally renowned journal of new writing; Emerson Review, an award-winning literary journal; Gauge, an award-winning magazine for 'engaging' topics; and Gangsters in Concrete, a magazine devoted to experimental fiction.

Your future. Author. Editor. Copywriter. Publisher. Whatever you want to do — or even if you're not quite sure yet — Emerson's Writing, Literature & Publishing program will help you determine your future.
