Liberal Arts

An Emerson education emphasizes rigorous professional and artistic training in the context of an equally strong liberal arts experience. All Emerson students are required to fulfill the General Education Requirements, which provide grounding in the primary fields and academic practices of the liberal arts. As you continue your work at Emerson, you will have the opportunity to take additional courses or choose a minor in a full range of liberal arts disciplines (history, philosophy, politics, sociology, psychology, literature, theatre, science, and the visual arts) as well as in cutting edge fields of interdisciplinary study (performance studies, global studies, digital media and culture, women’s and gender studies, urban studies and community involvement). At Emerson, the liberal arts provide inspiration, substance, and historical and intellectual context for the work you do in your major field.
