Communication Sciences & Disorders

Your potential. Imagine helping an autistic child to learn how to speak, an adult to recover from a stroke, or a deaf child to communicate with her parents. These are the types of rewarding challenges that one faces in a career as a speech-language pathologist.

Why Emerson? The term "communication disorders" refers to the science — and the art — of diagnosing and treating people with communication disorders. Speech-language pathologists and audiologists create and carry out treatment programs to alleviate or manage disorders such as stuttering, aphasia (acquired language disorder), language-learning disabilities, and many others.

As a Communication Sciences & Disorders student, you receive the intensive academic preparation you need to pursue graduate study or pre-professional employment in communication disorders or related fields. This program takes on added richness due to its close association with our master's program, which U.S. News & World Report ranks among the top 25 in the country. Meanwhile, our on-campus Robbins Speech, Language, and Hearing Center allows you to learn from patients of all ages who are battling a variety of communication difficulties.

Your Emerson experience. This program is a small, nurturing subset of the larger Emerson community. Students easily form friendships and professional networks with other students, and relationships with our talented faculty. On campus, you have access to the latest equipment for the acoustical analysis of speech signals, as well as for audio and video recording. Off campus, the major medical and educational center that is Boston offers a number of stimulating opportunities for field experience.

Your future. Health educator. Audiologist. Speech-language pathologist. Early intervention specialist. Speech researcher. Special education teacher. Whatever you want to do — or even if you're not quite sure yet — Emerson's Communication Sciences & Disorders program will help you determine your future.
