The Admission Process

Our graduate programs welcome applicants from across the United States and around the world. Admission is competitive and selective. We are looking for students whose academic and professional backgrounds, communication skills, and passion for the field meet the demands of their chosen program and promise a successful career. Please follow these steps to apply to a graduate program:

1. Submit the application by the appropriate deadline

We require that all applicants either submit the online application or download the Application PDF and mail in the form by the appropriate deadline. During these economically challenging times, many of our applicants have contacted us and asked for special consideration regarding the application fee. In response, we are pleased to extend fee waivers to all applicants for Fall 2010 admission.

2. Submit the required credentials

All applicants are also required to submit the following supporting credentials:

  • Transcripts: Official, signed transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended.

  • Test scores: GRE or GMAT test score requirements are specific to each program. View our test score requirements.
    • GRE test code: 3367
    • GMAT test code: KGR-QS-94

  • Letters of recommendation: Three letters of recommendation from persons best able to assess academic and professional qualifications, including motivations, goals, and clinical potential (for Communication Disorders applicants). Letters may be mailed to our office in signed, sealed envelopes or submitted through the online application system.

  • Essay(s): See the application for the essay requirements of your intended program of study.

  • Professional résumé: Include your professional and educational history.

3. Complete specific program requirements

The following programs have additional requirements that can be submitted online or with your mailed application:

  • Creative Writing: Submit a maximum of 15 pages (double-spaced) of fiction or nonfiction or a maximum of 15 pages of poetry. Label the writing sample with your preferred genre as indicated on the application form. You should supply writing samples that reflect your preferred genre.

  • Publishing and Writing: Submit a maximum of 15 pages (double-spaced) of nonfiction prose. This may be a combination of work you have published elsewhere or an unpublished nonfiction piece. Poetry and fiction pieces will not be accepted. You may also see the application form for essay prompts.

  • Media Art: Learn more about the required Creative Portfolio here.

  • Theatre Education: Submit an artistic résumé in addition to your professional résumé.

4. Check the status of your application credentials

After submitting your application and application fee, we'll provide you with an Emerson ID within 7-10 days. Use this ID to log into Admission Interactive Services to check the status of your application, view when your supporting credentials (like recommendation letters and test scores) were received, and submit questions to the Office of Graduate Admission.
