Department of Writing, Literature & Publishing Graduate Degrees
Creative Writing (MFA)
The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing is a nationally ranked program designed to equip you to create a publishable work in your chosen genre (fiction, nonfiction, or poetry). Guided by a faculty of award-winning authors, poets, and scholars with national and international reputations, you will create while you learn and advance in both knowledge and ability simultaneously. The program culminates with your submission and defense of a manuscript to be approved by a thesis committee.
Publishing & Writing (MA)
With the Master of Arts in Publishing and Writing, the department offers one of the only graduate degree programs in publishing found anywhere. The program covers every facet of both traditional and electronic publishing, giving you the keen editorial skills needed to succeed in today’s evolving literary landscape. Experienced publishing industry professionals share their knowledge as visiting lecturers, and internships at literary agencies, magazines, or publishing houses give you real-world experience.
Graduate Student Teaching
We also offer a Graduate Student Teaching program that trains students to teach college composition. Many of these students are hired to teach as paid instructors in Emerson’s First-Year Writing Program; those wishing to enter the academic job market earn not only money, but also invaluable experience for their future career.
