Costume Shop
![]() The Costume Shop |
The Costume Shop, located in the Tufte Building, is home to more than 10,000 costume pieces. The costumes are divided into two groups: Reserved Stock, for use in Emerson Stage productions; and Open Stock, for students to borrow.
The shop is heavily equipped for pre-professional training of costume designers and craftsmen. It has three 8-foot-long cutting tables, eight domestic sewing machines, four industrial sewing machines, an industrial leather machine, two industrial sergers, and an ironing station with two industrial irons. There’s also a separate fitting room for actors and a dye/craft room with a Vulcan boiler, two stovetop elements, a sink, an eight-foot-long table, and a washer/dryer.
The Costume Shop Supervisor runs the Shop and oversees student training, ranging from basic sewing to pattern manipulation, dyeing, painting, and millinery. A Guest Draper works closely with students in draping and construction details. The Wardrobe Supervisor organizes run crews for each production and works with students on backstage quick changes.
