Ellen was a Disney development executive for 13 years, working in series development, current programming, television specials, and both theatrical and direct-to-video films. She started as an intern and rose to Senior Vice President, heading the creative affairs group of DisneyToon Studios until 2006, when she left the company to immerse herself full time in screenwriting.

Ellen is a represented screenwriter with the Gersh Agency. One of her feature spec scripts, Candle, placed in the top 10% in the 2013 Nicholl Screenwriting Competition. She developed a one-hour supernatural teen drama series entitled Middlebrook with Dan Lin Productions and Warner Horizon Television. She is currently developing a horror series with producer Brian Gilbert entitled Postmortem. She has completed work on the feature script Sunrise in Memphis for Carol Burnett and CBS Films, based on a story by Carol's late daughter, Carrie Hamilton, and a new feature spec, The Arrow Collar Man, about the relationship between the artist J.C. Leyendecker and Charles Beach.

Ellen has served as a script analyst for screenplay contests, including the Nantucket Film Festival.
