Remain calm and follow the instructions below.

Fire

Remember R.A.C.E.

  • RELOCATE: If it's safe to do so, relocate people in immediate danger. Be aware of people who may need assistance.
  • ALARM: Pull the building fire alarm to alert others.
  • CONFINE: Close all doors as you exit.
  • EVACUATE: Evacuate the building. DO NOT use elevators. Report to your designated meeting site.

Power Failure

  • Move cautiously to a lit area: exits may be indicated by lit signs if the emergency power is operating. 
  • Turn off and unplug computers and other voltage-sensitive equipment. DO NOT burn candles. DO NOT use elevators.
  • For localized outages, contact ext. 8880 or place a Facilities Work Order at facilities.emerson.edu.
  • For information about prolonged outage, check emerson.edu/emergency.

Suspicious Person/Violent Act

  • Call Emerson Police. Provide as much information as possible about the person and their direction of travel.
  • Follow instructions of emergency personnel.
  • If you're told to seek shelter, go to the nearest available room, lock/barricade the doors, and silence phones but DO NOT turn them off.

If Told to Shelter in Place

  • Get indoors.
  • Shut and lock all doors and windows.
  • Silence all phones but DO NOT turn them off.
  • Stay inside until informed that it’s safe to go outside.
  • Follow instructions of emergency personnel.

Building Lockdown

A lockdown is a procedure used to lock all building entryways in order to protect people inside a facility from a dangerous external event. People may not enter a building during a lockdown.

  • Stay in your office or room and lock all doors and windows.
  • Stay inside until informed that it’s safe to go outside.
  • Silence all phones but DO NOT turn them off.
  • Follow instructions of emergency personnel.
  • Find updates on the situation at emerson.edu/emergency.

Suspicious Package/Bomb Threat

  • Do not touch or disturb the object.
  • Call Emerson Police and provide as much information as possible about the threat or object.
  • Notify your supervisor or RA.
  • Be prepared to evacuate.
  • Report anything suspicious to the authorities.

Hazardous Materials

  • Move away from the hazard to a safe location.
  • If it is an emergency or if anyone is in danger, call Emerson Police.
  • Follow instructions of emergency personnel.
  • Alert others to stay clear of the area.
  • Notify emergency personnel if you have been exposed to the hazard or have information about the release.

Earthquake

  • If you're inside, get under a strong table or desk or drop to the ground against an interior wall and cover your head and neck with your arms.
  • Stay away from windows, hanging objects, or tall furniture that can topple over.
  • Stay where you are until the shaking stops.
  • After the shaking stops, evacuate the building. DO NOT use elevators.
  • If you're outside, move to a clear area far from trees, poles, and buildings.

Severe Weather/Tornado

  • Seek shelter and get inside.
  • Shut all doors and windows.
  • Stay away from exterior windows and doors.
  • Do not go outside until the storm has passed.
  • Be aware of downed wires and falling objects.
