Writing, Literature & Publishing

Welcome from the Chair

Daniel Tobin, Chair of WLPWelcome to the Department of Writing, Literature and Publishing website.  I encourage you to join this community of writers, poets, publishers, critics, and essayists who share the common goal of excellence in their chosen vocations as well as generosity of purpose in their commitment to fostering and developing the community that sustains them.

We are a large community composed of many creative minds, and yet the small size of our classes encourages personal exchange.  The vibrant city of Boston offers a varied world of cultural experiences including readings, performances, panels, and lectures—everything one could imagine, and more, to stimulate the mind and inspire one’s sensibility.

Tradition gives us a way of understanding the past and envisioning the future, but it also requires active re-imagining and the kind of analysis that leads to a clearer prospect of who we are and what we can become.  The Department of Writing, Literature and Publishing has a long and distinguished tradition, and part of that tradition is to reshape ourselves according to our best designs.  I encourage you to join in the conversation, to give to this dynamic and eclectic community of makers your own lively engagement, and regardless of whether you join us at Emerson, I wish you all the best in your writing and publishing life.
