Writing, Literature & Publishing

Undergraduate Programs

In its mission, the Department of Writing, Literature and Publishing is dedicated to developing the skills of students who are training to become poets, writers of fiction and nonfiction, planning to enter the publishing industry, or preparing to go on to graduate level study. To that end it offers courses and workshops in each of these areas taught by published authors and experts in the field. The Department is also dedicated to developing basic skills in writing and critical thinking for all students at the College.

As such, undergraduate programs are designed to help students achieve personal and creative fulfillment and prepare them to pursue a wide range of professional careers. Students can earn either a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Writing, Literature and Publishing and can also elect minors in Writing, Publishing, Literature, Poetry or Fiction.

Students are introduced to the disciplines of writing, literature and publishing and develop specific skills and confidence in the medium of their choice. They learn and grow as professionals under the guidance of supportive faculty experts in poetry, fiction, screenwriting, magazine writing, publishing and other areas of specialization.

Emerson’s location in Boston, an East Coast publishing and cultural hub, expands the resources available to students.
