Program for students on academic probation

The Writing and Academic Resource Center provides a support program for students on academic probation The student’s probation status is determined by academic performance in the prior semester; probational students are notified of their status by the Academic Dean. Students who have made unsatisfactory academic progress in the prior semester are referred to the Center and those who achieved a G.P.A. below 2.0 are required to make and maintain contact.

Students should make an appointment with the appropriate coordinator to assess their academic history and determine what support may help them to have a successful current semester, as mandated by their probation status. Options can include the following: ongoing appointments to focus on time management and executive skills, note taking strategies and reading issues; work with a writing tutor to address written assignments; sessions with peer tutors for course-specific content tutoring; individual appointments for academic counseling and problem solving.

Mid-term evaluations are requested from instructors of all students on academic probation and this feedback is shared with students. The staff of the Writing and Academic Resource Center also provides advocacy and referrals to other support resources, as needed. Program for Bridge Transfer Students

The Writing and Academic Resource Center program for Bridge transfer students is designed to provide assessment and academic support to Bridge students as they transition to Emerson College. During Orientation week, the program coordinator schedules a workshop to review the status and services available through the Writing and Academic Resource Center.

During the first two weeks of classes, the coordinator also meets with students in individual appointments to review their current courses and determine what academic support might be appropriate to ensure a successful first year. Mutually determined options can include the following: ongoing appointments with a writing tutor to focus on written assignments; work with a peer tutor for course-specific content tutoring; individual sessions to address time management and study skills, including note taking and reading issues; appointments as needed for academic counseling and problem solving.

Mid-semester evaluations are requested from instructors of all Bridge students and this feedback is shared with students. To make an appointment, contact Matt Phelan at 617-824-7874 or by e-mail at Matthew_Phelan@emerson.edu
