Academic Support Services
In addition to writing support, the WARC also offers content-based peer tutoring—including math tutoring—and study strategies.
Peer tutoring
Our staff of undergraduate and graduate peer tutors assists students with the content of their coursework. We select our tutors, who have usually completed the course in a previous semester with the same instructor, based on a teacher’s recommendation or the student’s high academic performance. Tutors help students by discussing material, brainstorming study approaches, or assisting students with projects. The tutor will not do the work for the student, but instead serve as a coach to help the student achieve his or her learning goals.
To request a peer tutor for a specific course, students must call (617-824-7874) or visit the WARC (216 Tremont St. 5th Floor) and fill out a Peer Tutor Request form. We will then post the position on the Emerson website and make phone calls looking for tutors. We cannot, however, guarantee that we will find a tutor for every request; working with a tutor is not a substitute for your sincere efforts at success.
Math tutoring
Math tutors, both professionals and peers, are available for assistance with College Math, Business Math, and Statistics. Individual and group sessions are offered. Please call the WARC (617-824-7874) or stop by (216 Tremont St., 5th floor) to obtain a tutor’s name and phone number. You and the tutor will arrange when to meet at a place that’s convenient, such as the library. Bring your textbook, notes, and any questions you have. It is best to arrange these sessions in advance of tests to ensure enough time for review and additional sessions, if necessary.
Study strategies
In one-on-one sessions, our professional staff and prepared graduate tutors teach students strategies to become more effective and independent learners. These include reading comprehension, time management, organization, text and classroom note taking, test taking, and managing writer’s block or test anxiety.
