Residence Hall Fact Sheet

The following facts have been compiled by the Office of Housing and Residence Life to assist those new students who are preparing to join the residence hall community.

Appliances: The following equipment is permitted in residence hall rooms: TVs, radios, stereos, fans, electric razors, hair dryers, heating pads and computers. Residents are permitted to have refrigerator/freezer combinations provided the total size of the unit is no larger than a three cubic foot capacity. Microwaves are allowed, but are limited to 700 watts of cooking power.

The following equipment is not permitted in residence hall rooms: halogen lamps, sun lamps, heating coils, air conditioners, water beds, electric percolators, coffee makers, electric frying pans, toaster ovens, popcorn poppers, microwaves, indoor grilling appliances (i.e. George Foreman grills) and other heating or cooking elements.

Beds: All beds on campus are twin and they are extra long.

Bicycles: Limited storage space is available for bicycles in the campus bike room at Boylston Place. All bicycles must be engraved with the student's social security or Emerson College ID number, and be registered with the Office of Public Safety.

Computers and Cable TV: There is an ethernet connection for each student in a room and one cable TV connection per room.

Laundry Machines: Each residence hall is equipped with coin and I.D. card operated washers and dryers.

Musical Instruments: Students should not plan to use any musical instruments (e.g. drums, electric guitars, horns, etc.) which will be heard outside of their private room because it may interfere with the rights of other students attempting to sleep or study.

Pets: For health reasons, no pets are allowed in College residence halls.

Room Furnishings: The College supplies the following furniture in each room: bed, dresser, closet/wardrobe, desk, chair and window shade. Students supply their own linens, pillows, blankets, towels, lamps, wastebaskets, and bedspreads.

Loft units may not be brought into or built in the residence halls. In accordance with Boston fire code, students are not permitted to bring upholstered furniture or window coverings (e.g. curtains) in residence halls.

Any items capable of producing an open flame (e.g. candles, incense, etc.) are not permitted in the residence halls, even for decorative purposes. Possession of such items is considered a serious violation of the College's fire safety policies.

Smoking: Smoking is prohibited in all areas in the residence halls, including individual rooms and suites. Additionally, smoking is not permitted under the archway at the Little Building main entrance or within 25 feet of Piano Row.

Storage: Due to the limited space on campus, there is no storage available in the residence halls.

Telephone Service: Each residence hall room is wired for on-campus phone service. A telephone is not provided. Information regarding phone service is available at the following web address: http://www.emerson.edu/telecom.
