Now, I know how to use it and it has helped through a few papers already. Your words of advice to a new Emerson student on making the most of their orientation experience: Go to everything even if you don't think you'll like it. Either way you'll meet someone you never would have! What do you do to stay connected to your friends and family: Facebook is a huge one. But, definitely call your family once a week or more. it's always good to hear a familiar voice. What advice can you give to new students on making new friends: College is a new place to become who you want to be. No one knows who you were; make the best of letting them know. On the first night, I wrote notes on everyone’s white board to knock on 422 (my room). The bold ones knock and my roommate and I met our best friend Melanie, who is also probably telling this story! Your message to the families of our new students: Emerson is not just a college it’s a close community. We’ll take good care of them. You in 3 words: Outgoing, Determined, Bold |

Your words of advice to a new Emerson student on making the most of their orientation experience: Go to every event that Orientation has to offer. There are a lot of people who to them and all of the events are fun. This is how I met some of my closest friends. Activities at Emerson: I am a sister of Kappa Gamma Chi where I act as Sunshine Alumnae Co-Chair and Honoraries Co-Chair. I am also in EmComm on the B and E Account. This semester I am on the Family Weekend Planning Committee where I am in charge of Registration and Friday night activities. I am also a Student Admissions representative. Emerson/Boston Favorites: My favorite thing about Boston is the MFA. It is a great place to soak up all that Boston has to offer and it is free for all students which is an added bonus! Favorite thing about Orientation: I love move in. It is a ton of work but seeing all of the new student when they get here feel so welcome makes it all worth it. One thing you know now that you wish you had known as a new student: That the first few weeks is the best time to explore the city of Boston. Go the esplanade, take a trip to the MFA, walk around Harvard square or just take a stroll through the Gardens. Your words of advice to a new Emerson student on making the most of their orientation experience: Do everything that is in your schedule. You will meet a ton of people and feel really confident going into your first semester with a ton of knowledge about Emerson. Make sure to attend as many Orientation functions you can. What do you do to stay connected to your friends and family: I am a big face-to-face talker so my friends and family and I all video chat. We have weekly dates and sit down and talked about the week. It really helps me feel connected to them while still having the time to enjoy my life here. What advice can you give to new students on making new friends: Be open! Don’t just stick your floor or your roommates. It is important to branch out and get to know people all through out campus because that I what keeps the Emerson community so strong. Your message to the families of our new students: Let them have a little space and the bond between you will be strengthened because they have faith that you trust them. Know that no matter how old they get they will still need you and remember that this is one of the greatest times in their lives, but they couldn’t have done it without you. You in 3 words: Enthusiastic, Organized, Reliable |
Name: Mary J. YOG: 2011 Major: Theatre Education-Non perform. Hometown: Marietta, Georgia |
Activities at Emerson: Kappa Gamma Chi, Greek Council, Class Council, Kidding Around EFA Week, Student Life Office, OL 4 Life! Emerson/Boston Favorites: The North End, Christmas caroling in the gardens after the first big snow, used hidden book stores, the Central Square tavern (yum yum sweet potato fries), the Children's Museum, duck tours, the first warm day of Spring when everyone goes to lay on the Common, waffle Wednesdays at the dining hall, frozen yogurt at the dining hall, how after class changes Emerson College takes over Boylston Street...pretty much everything. Favorite thing about Orientation: All the wonderful new friends you make. I am still best friends with some of the people I met during my orientation week. Oh, and dancing in the street during move in. But I tend to do that all the time. During orientation more people just tend to join me. One thing you know now that you wish you had known as a new student: That getting involved early is the key. Emerson is such a wonderful place, and everyone is always doing something cool, but it's nice to find your niche on campus. And so what if you didn't make movies in high school? So what if you've never written before in your life? Now is the time to try it! When else would you get an experience to test the waters and see where your passion truly lies? Your words of advice to a new Emerson student on making the most of their orientation experience: Have a blast! Dance! Go to all the events and make the most out of the week because I promise, you are going to want to go back to it once it’s over! What do you do to stay connected to your friends and family: Emails, phone calls, text messages, care packages and Facebook of course! Even my Mom has one now! What advice can you give to new students on making new friends: Everyone at orientation is in the same shoes you're in. Everyone wants to make friends and meet new people. Don't be scared to put yourself out there! Your message to the families of our new students: Although it may be scary for both of y'all, try and enjoy the experience. These are going to be life long memories for the everyone involved, and for me, being away from my family made me appreciate so much more and coming home never felt so good. You in 3 words: Sassy, Southern, Sophisticated |
Name: Patrick L. YOG: 2012 Major: Communication Studies Hometown: Little Compton, Rhode Island |
Activities at Emerson: Brother in Phi Alpha Tau professional fraternity, The Emerson Channel, The EVVY Awards, Emerson Television, Radio and Film (TRF), Emerson Independent Video (EIV), Student Government Association (SGA), Class of 2012 Council, Communications, Politics and Law Association (CPLA), Student Admissions Representative and Tour Guide, Action for Community Transformation (ACT), Lambda Pi Eta Communications Honor Society, RareWorks Theater, Kidding Around Theater, ORIENTATION! Emerson/Boston Favorites: Emerson favorite: The Cutler Majestic Stage. To stand, squinting under those lights, and to imagine how many world-class performers have graced the same space you’re on is inspiring. My favorite spot in Boston is the inner courtyard at the Boston Public Library. All year, when I needed to really write or do work, I would take the T just two stops and go into the courtyard and sit and work. It’s where almost all of my papers were vetted and edited and reworked. It’s just a very centered place. Favorite thing about Orientation: Time we spend in the Cutler. That place is epic! Sometimes I’d be dying for sleep early in the morning because I wanted to meet everyone the night before, but when I was there, I just felt so united with the rest of the class and the whole school. To me, it feels like that was the heart of Emerson. One thing you know now that you wish you had known as a new student: If you don’t wear it at home, you WILL NOT wear it at school. I bought and brought so much stuff Freshman year. Everyday my room was a mess with clothing, and the same clothes that I never really liked before, didn’t get any cuter. Don’t overcrowd yourself. People like you for you, not just for the number of throw pillows and decorative posters you bring. Your words of advice to a new Emerson student on making the most of their orientation experience: Try your best to go to as much as you can. I have so many friends who skipped during Orientation and they all tell me they regret it. The more you do and see that week, the more you see as possible at Emerson. Who knows what you may see and how that will affect you? I saw the Emerson Channel TV Studio and now… it’s drastically changed who I am at Emerson and who I’ll become. There are so many things like that all week that give you a chance to see something that could really inspire you. So give everything a chance. What do you do to stay connected to your friends and family: I’m actually at the Castle in the Netherlands as I’m writing this. As a Freshman I was so BAD at staying in touch with everyone. It seems impossible because you are in such a new and different world, how can you keep up? Don’t feel like you have to. You don’t need to know everything about their lives and they don’t need to know everything about yours. But send them reminders. Random wall posts. Funny photo comments. At the castle I send a message or two and a postcard to all my people at home every week. I never did that before. It helps to make you both feel you’re still active in each other’s lives without being near each other. What advice can you give to new students on making new friends: People love smiles. Be willing to give a smile and a handshake to every person who walks by. You never know who they could be, what they have to offer and how it could change your life. You are a blank slate starting at Emerson. You have a million ways to prove yourself. A single handshake can set off a life-changing chain of events. So stick your hand out and smile. It can only help you. Your message to the families of our new students: Chillax. This is an exciting time! Enjoy it. Be able to back away and watch us take the reins. Send us your love. We will appreciate it, even if we don’t say it. Learn about Emerson. Your student is a big investment, so if you can help them find ways to make the most of their time here, do it. That way when they win the Oscar you’ll be part of the acceptance speech. You in 3 words: Optimistic, Cheerful, Sascha-Fierce |
Name: Morgan S. YOG: 2011 Major: Acting Hometown: New Haven, Connecticut |
Activities at Emerson: Orientation Core Staff Chair 2009-2010, Alpha Epsilon Phi President, Campus Activities Board, Class of 2011 Council, Emerson Forensics and Debate, Freshman Class Council, Greek Council, Hand Me Down Night/The ERA Awards Committee, and SGA Executive Vice President Emerson/Boston Favorites: My Boston favorites include enjoying ice cream from J.P. Lick’s, strolling through the Public Garden on beautiful days, shopping on Newbury St., and learning the rich history of the city. My favorite thing about Emerson College is the amount of opportunities the school offers me to be an active leader on campus. Favorite thing about Orientation: HOORAY! is undoubtedly the most fun activity of Orientation, but the Freshman Class Council information session is where I first met the people at Emerson I am closest to now! One thing you know now that you wish you had known as a new student: I wish I had known NOT to get involved with too much too soon! I think I’ve narrowed down my interests and have learned to manage my time between the groups I love being a part of. Your words of advice to a new Emerson student on making the most of their orientation experience: Be open to everything! Attend all the events that catch your interest during Orientation and participate in activities you never imagined yourself doing. College is a time to discover the REAL you, so make the most of the beginning! What do you do to stay connected to your friends and family: No matter how far from home I may be, I am always connected to my friends and family through the love we have for each other. I call my mom every day because she’s my best friend, and I use email and Facebook to get in contact with my friends I can’t see as often. I take comfort in knowing my friends are occupied at their schools with new friends and activities, but I enjoy going home on the weekends or for breaks to visit with the people and family I truly miss! What advice can you give to new students on making new friends: BE YOUSELF! Emerson’s students are all true individuals, and you will meet many cool people with the same likes or dislikes as you. It may be difficult at first to leave the friends you grew up and made memories with, but before you know it, you’ll be making memories and lasting relationships by simply being yourself. Your message to the families of our new students: Welcome to the Emerson community! As parents of a new Emersonian, you too will soon share in the great experiences that lay before your son or daughter. Your student will be offered wonderful opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom and through the many activities they may choose to participate in. Emerson invites motivated and passionate minds, ready to study what they love. Though it may be difficult for you to leave your child at school, take comfort in knowing that Emerson will provide them with tools to succeed and a welcoming environment to call home. I love being in the Dining Hall on a busy week night to socialize with friends and meet new people. I always spend a lot of time in the library because it’s a nice peaceful place to work and study. The Emerson students are also pretty amazing—the community at Emerson is so unique and enthusiastic. As for Boston, I love the North End! It such a beautiful area of Boston that’s filled with culture and history, however remains upbeat and exciting! One thing you know now that you wish you had known as a new student: I wish I knew that there is no rush in getting involved in things on campus. Enjoy yourself and don't be afraid to be yourself! What do you do to stay connected to your friends and family: It's very important to check-in with your parents every once in a while through phone calls, emails, texts, etc. Letters are always fun and exciting to get! It's also important for parents to come to Family Weekend during the first semester. Facebook is the best way to communicate with friends— but phone calls, mail and emails are a little more genuine way to stay in touch! Invite friends to come visit for the weekend, or go visit them! What advice can you give to new students on making new friends: Be open to all different kinds of people. Try to get to know as many new people as possible and don't be afraid to make lots of new friends. Remember that you are in the same boat as everyone else! With so many things happening at once it may seem a bit overwhelming, but if you think you might be interested in a certain group or that you might enjoy a certain event, I say try it out. They will always provide opportunities to meet new people. What do you do to stay connected to your friends and family: I really do my best to stay in touch with friends in family not only through Facebook and AIM, but through smaller gestures that remind them I am thinking of them. What advice can you give to new students on making new friends: Don’t be afraid to meet new people! Remember that just being at Emerson for the first time together is something you already share and can bond over.
