Screening of Eloyce Gists' Hell Bound Train and Verdict Not Guilty with film historian S. Torriano Berry

Join us for a  screening of the recently restored Hellbound Train.  This is the first film Eloyce Gist, the first African American female director, co-wrote and produced.   You will also see a short film she co-wrote, produced and directed Verdict Not Guilty.   Hear how Howard University professor and film historian, S. Torriano Berry, reconstructed and re-scored the film.

Come join your Emerson Amigos in a movie screening of Frida!  Frida, original screenplay written by Emerson’s own Professor Diane Lake, chronicles the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek).  Frida shared unflinchingly and openly with Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina) and the young couple took the art world by storm. From her complex and enduring relationship with her mentor and husband to her illicit and controversial affair with Leon Trotsky, to her provocative and romantic entanglements with women, Frida Kahlo lived a bold and uncompromising life as a political, artistic, and sexual revolutionary.

The Emerson Poetry Project Presents:  Corrina Bain
An Evening of Passionate and Unapologetic Poetry

Corrina is a state certified sexual assault crisis counselor and a clinic assistant in abortion services at Planned Parenthood in Boston.  In May 2006- May 2007, she worked as an aid worker in Mozambique.  She began performing her poetry when she was 14. She has opened for spoken word legends as diverse as Jim Carroll and Patricia Smith, and is credited in the lyrics of the Sage Francis album "A Healthy Distrust". She is the author of a book entitled Ugly Poems For Ugly People, and has an album in collaboration with Tom Inhaler called Distilled. She has been a member of 4 national poetry slam teams, most recently representing Providence, Rhode Island.

What Was I Thinking…

Hear from two editors from LA, recently featured on The Today Show for their newly published book, What Was I Thinking.  This compilation of stories, written by many first time authors, describes moments in women’s lives that cause them to reevaluate their decisions while learning more about what they want from life.  Please feel free to bring your own work because after you hear from the editors, you will have the opportunity to read your own “What Was I Thinking…” story.

Latina Thursdays Film Series:  Selena

Join your Emerson Amigos with a viewing of Selena.  Selena tells the story of Latin Queen Selena Quintanilla-Perez, who was the most popular Latin singer at the time of her tragic death at the age of only 23 years in 1995.  The film tells the story of the singer as she is accidentally discovered by her own father at the age of 10.  Her life story takes off when Jennifer Lopez accurately portrays Selena through her unforgettable concerts, her family struggles, and her secret marriage to her guitarist Chris Perez.

Join your Emerson Amigos with the conclusion of Latina Thursdays Film Series and a viewing of Maria Full of Grace.  In a small village in Colombia, the pregnant seventeen year old, Maria, (Catalina Sandino Moreno) supports her family with her salary working in floriculture. She is fired and with a total lack of perspective of finding a new job, she decides to accept the offer to work as a drug mule, flying to USA with sixty-two pellets of cocaine in her stomach. Once in New York, things do not happen as planned.
