Sizes of Rooms
Our current buildings were not originally designed and built as residence halls; they have been converted from individual residences or businesses through the years. There are no standard room sizes. Rooms are square to rectangular in shape. All rooms have at least one window. Windows also vary in size.
Electronic and Communication Access
Every room is equipped with one cable jack and one telephone jack. There is an individual Internet port to accommodate every resident of the room. Residents are responsible for bringing all necessary cords (or splitters) to connect their phone, television, and computers to the ports provided.
For more information on computer configurations and recommended specifications, read the I.T. Help Desk’s tips on Purchasing a Personal Computer.
All rooms designated as residence hall bedrooms come with a set of standard furniture per person:
- a bed frame
- XL twin mattress (36” x 80”)
- desk chair
- closet or wardrobe unit
Furniture may not be removed from the room to which it is assigned. Students are responsible for any furniture lost or damaged over the course of the year.
College bed frames vary in color and style throughout the residence halls. Many rooms have bed frames that allow the beds to be bunked or unbunked, per the residents liking. Emerson College does NOT allow bed frames to be raised with cinder blocks or stacked wood. Commercially manufactured bed raisers that allow an additional 6 inches of height are allowed. In its regular position, there is a 12-inch clearance between the floor and the bed frame.
All of our beds are XL twin (36” x 80”), so you’ll need to purchase XL sheets, which can be found at stores such as Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond. When packing for college, you may want to consider bringing sheet sets, a mattress pad, bed foam, extra pillowcases, pillows, and a comforter.
Refrigerators and Microwaves
As a resident student, you are permitted to have a refrigerator and microwave. Microwaves up to, but not greater than, 700 watts of cooking power are permitted. Refrigerator and freezer combinations no larger than 3 cubic feet total are permitted.
To prevent damage to your posters and the walls, please use removable 3M poster tape or removable adhesive squares. This will cause the least amount of damage to the walls.
All windows are outfitted with shades. Curtains, as well as tapestries and other such wall hangings are not permitted.
Services and Staff
Please report all requests for repairs in your own room or suite to Facilities Management at ext. 8880 or at the off-campus number, 1-866-585-4520. Any lock changes or requests to move furniture should be directed to your Residence Director. If the concern is an issue in a public area, please report it to your RA or RD. Requests for repairs to telephone lines or Internet connections should be submitted to the IT Help Desk at 617-824-8080.
Each residence hall has its own laundry facilities available to students 24 hours a day. The laundry machines can be used with ECcash placed on a student’s ID card. Students will receive their IDs upon arriving to campus.
Every residence hall has a mailbox station where mail, magazines, and package slips are delivered to the students Monday through Friday. There is one mailbox per room, so students living in a double room will share a mailbox with their roommates. Learn more about mail services and residence hall addresses.
Emerson College shall not be liable or otherwise responsible in any way for the loss of or damage to a resident’s personal property. Residents are advised to check for possible coverage of personal belongings and other items under their parents’/guardians’/homeowners’ or renters’ insurance. Additional insurance for student property is recommended.
Residence Life Staff
There are professional staff and student staff members living in each residence hall on campus. Resident Assistants (RAs), the student staff members, have direct responsibilities for the residents on a floor(s) or in a section of the residence hall. RAs can explain College policy, refer you to College services and offices, respond to emergency situations, sponsor programs, and act as a general source of support for the residents.
Professional staff members, along with their supervisory and administrative duties, participate in a rotating duty schedule to respond to emergency situations in the residence halls after business hours every day that resident students are living in the halls.
Emerson’s police officers work to maintain safe and secure surroundings amid the bustle of an urban campus. Security desks are located in every Emerson building with additional desks in the residence halls that monitor access.
Our Police Department also provides law enforcement protection and emergency services on a 24/7 basis, a walking escort service, property identification and engraving, and a state-of-the-art emergency notification system.
