Bright Lights: Sound City
Feb2020147:00 pm - 9:00 pmParamount Center
Bright Family Screening Room
Sponsored by Department of Visual and Media Arts
Sound City Studios was located in the San Fernando Valley, amidst rows of dilapidated warehouses. Artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Rick Springfield, Tom Petty, Kyuss, Slipknot, and Nirvana recorded groundbreaking music at the studio. The film tells the story of the studio from its early days in 1969 until its closing in 2011, then follows Dave Grohl's purchase of the studio's custom analog Neve console, which he moved to his personal studio, Studio 606. Famous musicians who recorded at Sound City reunite at Studio 606 for a jam session and to make an album of "all-new all-original songs," each one composed and recorded exclusively for the film within its own 24-hour session on that console.

Written in 1977, Fefu and Her Friends focuses on the rich internal lives of eight women who spend some time together over a series of several days, entertaining themselves in idle talk, exchanging gossip and views on life, their life and other's lives, care-free gallivanting, and amateur concerts, dances and lectures. Eating, drinking -- drinking especially -- and lots and lots of coffee. The women are diverse in nature but all bound together by their friendship and their "sisterhood." Love is in the air: the kind of love that only women can have for each other.
