Jurisdiction

The enforcement of all law and regulations pertaining to the safety, security and good order of the Emerson College community is the responsibility of the Department of Public Safety. In addition to its law enforcement mandate, the Department provides emergency medical service, fire safety protection, transportation services, and a myriad of other services, many of which are commonly recognized by modern law enforcement professionals a "community policing" practices. All these tasks that are performed by the men and women of the Department provide for a safe and secure living, learning and working environment for all who come to Emerson College.

The Director of Public Safety is responsible for the leadership, management, planning, organization and administration of all the activities of the Emerson College Department of Public Safety. In addition to being the coordinator with the college community on all safety and security matters, the Director acts as liaison for the College with local, state and federal law enforcement and safety agencies.

Interaction and cooperation between the Emerson College Department of Public Safety, the Massachusetts State Police, Boston Police and other enforcement and security agencies in the campus vicinity are excellent. Additionally, the Department is recognized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Criminal Justice Agency; thus information of individuals pertaining to crimes or criminality that normally is protected from release is freely shared with the Department.

The Emerson College Police Officers are appointed as Special State Police Officers under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 22C Section 63 by the Colonel of the Massachusetts Department of State Police. This statue states that "they shall have the same power to make arrests as regular police officers for any criminal offense committed in or upon lands or structures owned, used, or occupied by such college..."
