Emerson Stage

By Will Eno
Directed by Sarah Hickler

Welcome to Middletown, population – well, not big enough to be too big, nor small enough to be too small. Location: exactly between two other towns, both of which have long since faded away. Mary Swanson is new to the area, and eager to start a family and enjoy the neighborly bonds of Middletown life – but small-town social pleasantries don’t always go as she expects. Often described a play that mixes the lyrical beauty of Our Town with the language of Samuel Beckett, Middletown is wry, acerbic, funny, profound, and heartbreaking: a meditation on birth, death, and the points between.
