Welcome from the INTERIM Chair
This is an amazing and exciting time to study communication.
New media and technologies are changing how we connect with each other—from letters to emails to chats, land lines to cell phones to Skype, first life to Second Life, print to the blogosphere, CD players to iPods, and more.
Each day we encounter more communication, in more forms. Complexity increases, certainty decreases. In the postmodern consumer society, we struggle to create identities and relationships that sustain us and provide meaning to our lives.
The problems we face locally and globally can often appear insurmountable. How can we reverse rapid environmental destruction, promote peace and justice around the world, create sustainable economies, improve health and education, and foster societies that value the dignity and worth of all persons?
The challenges are great indeed, but so are our resources for addressing them. Central to these is communication itself. The latest advances in communication theory, research, and practice provide powerful insights into what it takes to mobilize people to address problems, work together, unleash creativity, and advance positive change.
That’s where you come in, and that’s where we come in. The world needs talented, energetic people who can communicate ethically and strategically to address real-world needs at all levels, from local to global. Emerson College has a long and proud history of excellence in communication. We offer an outstanding faculty, top students, a dynamic curriculum, and unparalleled extracurricular service and professional opportunities, all of which combine to help you on your path to leadership in your chosen field.
