  • Shakespeare in Love

    10/05/12

    Paramount Center
    Bright Family Screening Room
    Public: $10, Members/Seniors: $7.50, Students: $5

ArtsEmerson: The World on Stage presents Shakespeare in Love. While Shakespeare suffers a severe bout of writer's block, Viola de Lesseps, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, is determined to go on the stage despite women being strictly forbidden to act. She disguises herself as a boy and so impresses Shakespeare with her performance that he casts her in the role of Juliet – only to discover her true identity and fall madly in love. The witty, sparkling screenplay was written by Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman, and the film picked up Academy Awards for both Best Film and Best Actress for Gwyneth Paltrow, who gave a beautifully nuanced performance as the object of Shakespeare's desire.

  • Sequence 8

    10/05/12
    7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
    Cutler Majestic Theatre
See artsemerson.org for ticket pricing information

ArtsEmerson: The World On Stage presents Sequence 8. After blowing the minds of Boston audiences with PSY, Les 7 doigts de la main returns with their sixth and newest creation, Sequence 8, giving Boston another chance to witness their incredible movement-based artistry. Placing extraordinary acrobatics in ordinary contexts, in Sequence 8 emotions heighten until they spring into action and relationships transform and evolve until they create actual velocity. Set not in a specific time or place but rather on a vertical canvas of sorts, this acrobatic dance and theatre piece contemplates the role of the "other," and how we define ourselves through and against it. For their 10th anniversary production, Les 7 doigts de la main combines explosive physical exploits with a thoughtful depiction of human relationships for an unforgettable performance.

The inveterate con artist, Tartuffe, finds his mark in Orgon, an affluent man of unquestioned faith. • My Own Private Idaho

    10/05/12
    9:00 pm - 11:00 pm
    Paramount Center
    Bright Family Screening Room
    Public $10, Members & Seniors $7.50, Students $5

ArtsEmerson: The World on Stage presents My Own Private Idaho. Very loosely based on Shakespeare's Henry IV & V, Gus Van Sant directed this haunting tale of two drifters. Mike and Scott embark on a journey to find Mike's mother, taking them from Idaho to Portland to Italy. Mike, a narcoleptic gay hustler (played by the mesmerizing River Phoenix) is in love with his best friend, another hustler named Scott (Keanu Reeves) who will inherit a family fortune when he turns 21. Convinced that Scott will stay with him even after the inheritance, Mike is shattered when Scott falls in love with a young Italian girl. One of the most unusual modern adaptations of Shakespeare, Phoenix's achingly vulnerable performance elevates the film to a sublime meditation on the desire for home.
