  • La Nana

    3/30/13
    1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
    Paramount Center
    Bright Family Screening Room

ArtsEmerson: The World On Stage presents La Nana. This award-winning dramedy twists and turns with emotion through one maid's journey of rediscovering herself. As the head maid in a Chilean household for over 20 years, she has integrated into the Valdes family, but her loyalty has driven her to dizzy spells due to overexposure of chlorine. Her position is threatened when her boss hires younger maids to assist her, and she schemes to drive away her competition. Poignant and funny, sad and heartfelt, this film examines the nature of subservience and the difference between employment and family.

  • Neighbouring Sounds

    3/30/13
    6:00 pm - 8:15 pm
    Paramount Center
    Bright Family Screening Room

ArtsEmerson: The World On Stage presents Neighbouring Sounds. Seen last May in the Bright Family Screening Room, from its sophisticated and aurally keen opening sequence, film programmer, critic and now-director Kleber Mendonça Filho's gripping debut is assured and audacious—unmistakably a breakout film. A private security firm is hired to police the streets of a middle-class neighborhood in present-day Brazil, their presence the catalyst for Neighboring Sounds' exploration of a culture seething with discontents and anxiety, "the palpable unease of a society that remains unreconciled to its troubled past and present inequities" (FSLC).

The sun is shining, the snow is melting, and its become that time again: spring at Emerson! This year, an overwhelming number of seniors came forward expressing the desire for the class gift to honor their classmate, Griffin O'Brien. Griff is described by Emersonians as the funniest person ever and an amazing friend. He was a comedic force and a valued member of not just the 2013 senior class, but of the entire Emerson community.

After his passing, his family created a scholarship at Emerson in celebration of his life and talent. So, we are excited to announce that the 2013 Senior Class Gift will go toward the Griffin O'Brien Scholarship. Emerson's Senior Gift is a tradition you became familiar with during your final year at Emerson. It is a celebration of each graduating class's legacy, and through seniors' philanthropy, the gift ensures that their legacy lives on long after they don their cap and gown. Each class is unique and each Senior Gift makes a difference for future Emersonians.

Why are we telling you this? To celebrate Griff's life and raise awareness for the Senior Gift, Emerson's comedy troupes and EC4Life (Emerson's student alumni association) are sponsoring the Griffin O'Brien Scholarship Comedy Night.

The show will feature performances from Jimmy's Traveling All-Stars, the group in which Griff was a head writer, as well as Emerson Comedy Workshop, Stroopwafel, This is Pathetic, The Girlie Project, Chocolate Cake City, and Swomo. This is a rare chance to see performances from the groups who helped Emerson be named the Funniest College in the Country in 2012.

It will be a laugh-filled, heartwarming event for everyone with ties to the Emerson community, and we hope you can join us!

Hurry before it's too late! Register now »

We look forward to laughing with you!
