ArtsEmerson: The World on Stage presents The Watchmen. Based on one of the most seminal graphic novels ever written, Alan Moore's Watchmen is more of an investigation of the nature of power than a mere comic book (originally released in 1986 as a series of twelve issues). Directed by Zack Snyder, the film is set in an alternate history during the 1980s where the U.S. has won the Vietnam War and Richard Nixon is President as the Cold War threatens to escalate. As anti-vigilante sentiment grows, the Watchmen must rally to prevent nuclear catastrophe.

ArtsEmerson: The World On Stage presents Hamlet. From Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London, a handful of players perform this timeless classic. Hamlet explores political intrigue and sexual obsession, philosophical reflection ("to be, or not to be…") and violent action, tragic depth and wild humor. Capturing the youthful and less jaded aspects of Hamlet's personality rarely seen in more traditional interpretations, in just two and a half hours, this production embraces the theatre of Shakespeare's day. Actors play multiple characters and live music, infusing the performance with a lively energy. Humorous and boisterous, the Globe Company packs an emotional wallop with their inherent theatricality.

In this adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by John Steinbeck, the Joad family has lost everything: their home, livelihood, dignity and nearly all hope for a better future. With what little remains, the family leaves the Dust Bowl fields of Oklahoma for the fertile lands promised in California. Expecting the land of milk and honey, the Joads face further disillusionment, exploitation, and a lack of resources at the hands of big business and corrupt authorities.

Worried that her opinions will cause her problems, Marji's family sends her to Vienna to study.
