Ted Gup chronicles lessons learned working a summer job

“Sweat is the great equalizer”—that was one of the many things Journalism Department Chair Ted Gup said he learned while working various summer jobs between semesters of college.

“Summer Jobs,” Gup’s op-ed piece extolling the virtues of summer labor, ran July 11 in the Opinion and Ideas section of The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Gup wrote that he believes summer jobs are often the defining experience of one’s college years. “Sometimes, the grittier and more physically demanding the jobs, the more insight they yield about character—our own and others’—about the nature of the work, and about how we define class.”
