Simpson talks about moderating debates

June 13, 2012

Emerson Journalism Leader-in-Residence Carole Simpson spoke with The Takeaway about her experience as the first woman and minority to solely moderate a presidential debate. She also discussed who she believes should moderate the upcoming debates this fall.

Carole Simpson is a 3-time Emmy-award winning former anchor and senior correspondent for ABC News who teaches in the Department of Journalism at Emerson.

Some people "just don't think a woman or a minority is as good as a white man,” she said when asked why she thinks there has not been another female moderator of a presidential debate in the 20 years since her experience. They think “that a white man has more authority, that people will respond to him as an authority figure more than they will to a woman, and it’s just crazy,” she said.
