Sharma, Phillips in Globe networking article

June 24, 2013

The Boston Globe published a story on June 23 about the secrets of professional networking and interviewed Emerson alumni Colette Phillips, MS ’76, a member of the Emerson Board of Overseers, and Raj Sharma, MS ’83, an Emerson Trustee, for the article.

Sharma is managing director of investments and head of The Sharma Group of Merrill Lynch Private Banking and Investment Group. Phillips is president and chief executive officer of the public relations firm Colette Phillips Communications, Inc.

Phillips emphasized the need to leave one’s comfort zone when networking, something she had to do because, “I started off as somewhat of a shy person,” she told the Globe.

Sharma said the key to successful networking is not to worry about networking. Instead, he prefers to think of himself as a resource.
