Asim quoted on Paula Deen controversy

June 25, 2013

Associate Professor Jabari Asim, of the Writing, Literature and Publishing Department, was quoted June 25 in a Chicago Tribune opinion piece about the controversy surrounding celebrity chef Paula Deen, who was recently fired from The Food Network for admitting her use of racial slurs in a court deposition.

“There is no way to defend the reprehensible language she has used,” said Asim, who is the author of The N Word: Who Can Say It, Who Shouldn’t, and Why.

Speaking to her alleged mistreatment of minorities in restaurants she co-owns, Asim said: “The real issue here is her behavior, not so much the language.”
