Senior Lions basketball players honored

March 03, 2011

The Emerson College basketball programs honored their seniors during the final home games of the season on Feb. 19. In the men’s program, Tom Messinger (Florence, MA), Kabir Moss (Chico, CA), and Chris Taylor (Calais, ME) received recognition.

The lone senior in the women’s program was Kathy Andrade (Hull, MA).

Tom Messinger leaves Emerson College and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) second on the all-time list for three-point shots made, trailing only two-time All-American Rob Hennigan. During his career, Messinger made 252 of his 296 field goals from behind the arc. He finished his career with the GNAC record for three-point field goal percentage, having made 252 of 674 three-point attempts for 43.9%. Despite having missed all but 12 games his freshman year with an injury, Messinger still scored 902 career points, and in his senior year was named a GNAC All-Conference selection.

Kabir Moss transferred to Emerson mid-year his freshman year and shortly thereafter was convinced to try out for the basketball team. The ultimate walk-on, Moss progressed from a little-used practice player to a valuable reserve, then a starter his senior year. Although the team’s only legitimate “big man,” Moss was one of the team’s better passers and ball handlers, and finished third on the 2010–2011 Lions in assists.

Chris Taylor played only his senior season at Emerson and was limited by injury. Unable to play until the last two games of the year, Taylor nonetheless attended every practice and every game. Taylor transferred to Emerson at mid-season during his freshman year after attending and playing a semester of basketball at Elmira College. After two years off, Taylor gave basketball another shot his senior year and provided valuable leadership throughout the year.

Kathy Andrade leaves Emerson College as the second-leading career scorer and rebounder in the history of the Emerson program. Andrade scored 1,182 points and pulled down 761 rebounds. A true iron woman, Andrade never missed a game in 108 starts. She finished her career as a two-time GNAC All-Star. A Broadcast Journalism major, Andrade has been a two-time GNAC All-Academic selection, and will earn that honor again this year. Equally valuable to Emerson College off the court, Andrade has been an Orientation chair, is a member of the Campus Activities Council, and is president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
