Ploughshares, the Emerson–based literary magazine, is one of 895 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive a National Endowment for the ArtsArt Works grant, announced NEA Acting Chairwoman Joan Shigekawa.

Ploughshares will receive a $10,000 grant to support Ploughshares Solos, the magazine’s new digital-born series, which features long stories and long essays published serially on e-reader platforms.

Ploughshares has been very fortunate to have had support from the NEA almost since its founding in 1971,” said Ladette Randolph, editor-in-chief of Ploughshares. “The NEA grant means a lot to us. Not only is the financial support meaningful to the magazine’s bottom line, but having the imprimatur of the National Endowment for the Arts in the front matter of the magazine and on our website is a significant endorsement of the work we’re doing within the literary community.”

Art Works grants support the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence: public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and enhancing the livability of communities through the arts.

The NEA received 1,528 eligible Art Works applications, requesting more than $75 million in funding. Of those applications, 895 are recommended for grants for a total of $23.4 million.

“The National Endowment for the Arts,” Shigekawa said, “is proud to support these exciting and diverse arts projects that will take place throughout the United States. Whether it is through a focus on education, engagement, or innovation, these projects all contribute to vibrant communities and memorable experiences for the public to engage with the arts.”
