In three days, Journalism major Kathleen Montero ’14 will fly from her hometown of New York City to the new Emerson College Los Angeles to start an internship with BBC Worldwide.

“I am so thrilled to be a part of something that’s so big at Emerson,” Montero said. “Everyone aspires to do the LA program and I just can’t wait to be immersed in such a different culture.”

She learned about the BBC internship through a post in the Emerson Los Angeles Spring 2014 Facebook group. Within a week she applied, interviewed, and was called back about the position.

“It happened so quickly,” she said. “I’m just so thrilled to have the opportunity to do what I want and for a huge company.”

When Montero first came to Emerson, her two main goals were to take part in the Los Angeles Program and also participate in the Emmy Experience. That’s when WEBN-TV student journalists are sent to Los Angeles to cover the red carpet at the Emmy Awards.

Montero was able to interview some Hollywood producers and designers — who worked on shows like Good Luck Charlie and 2 Broke Girls — on camera. Even though she enjoyed the experience, Montero said she realized she would rather work behind the camera than be on air, playing to her strengths and experience overseeing stories as a producer.

“I had a huge thrill of knowing what’s going on,” she said. “You’re in charge of what everyone has to do. I love that responsibility.”

At Emerson, Montero is part of the professional sorority Kappa Gamma Chi. She said her sorority sisters provided her with support in her journalism pursuits.

“They helped me fine-tune my professionalism and had me open up my eyes to bigger issues,” she said. “We’re all very driven. It’s kind of hard in this world where everything’s just so cutthroat. Here, you have a support system [of people] who want to see you do well.”

Montero says she is ready for move-in day.

“I’m really excited to be one of the first students to break in to the new center,” she said. “It’s going to be so amazing to open up this huge building. The features are remarkable.”
