MacWade $50k challenge exceeded

September 21, 2011

More than 400 young alumni stepped up and made donations to the recent MacWade Challenge, which raised over $27,000 for the College and resulted in a $25,000 matching gift. The proceeds of the Challenge supported 27 different Emerson departments and organizations, including various scholarships funds, the academic departments, WERS Radio, and the EVVY Awards.

The MacWade Challenge raised more than $50,000.

Mike MacWade, MA ’85, managing director at Putnam Investments in Boston, issued a $25,000 challenge last fall to Emerson’s Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) to increase their support of the College. He made a commitment to match all gifts from GOLD alumni up to $500, dollar for dollar, up to $25,000.

"Graduates from 2001 to 2010 make up 47% of the Emerson alumni population," said Barbara Rutberg, interim vice president of the Office of Development, which coordinated the MacWade campaign. "Annual gifts to Emerson provide the opportunities that make the College one-of-a-kind and provide financial assistance for deserving students."

The MacWade Challenge sparked new connections between young alumni and the College, said Rutberg. "What we value most is engaging young alumni in our communication efforts, and inspiring recent graduates to remain connected with Emerson.”

In conjunction with the fundraising challenge, students from four different student organizations went head-to-head in a video challenge to produce a short film to promote the MacWade campaign. The Emerson Warlords won the competition.
