Emerson to host ACE Fellow

July 17, 2012

Lori Beth Way, a political science professor from California State University, Chico, will spend the 2012–13 academic year at Emerson College as part of the American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows Program. She is one of 56 participants from across the country in the program.

Lori Beth Way will spend the 2012-2013 academic year at Emerson.

The ACE Fellows Program, established in 1965, is designed to strengthen institutional capacity and build leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing promising senior faculty and administrators for responsible positions in college and university administration. Of the more than 1,700 people who have participated in the first 47 years of the program, more than 300 have become chief executive officers and more than 1,100 have become provosts, vice presidents, or deans.

Way joined the faculty of California State University, Chico, in 1999. As professor in the Department of Political Science, she serves as the advisor to more than 200 criminal justice majors. She earned her PhD in political science and a graduate certificate in women’s studies from Syracuse University. Her research areas are policing; the courts; and how race, class, and gender influence the administration of justice. She is co-author of Realities and Challenges: Introduction to Criminal Justice and has published several articles on the historical changes in and significance of Supreme Court concurrences.

“We’re honored that Lori Beth selected Emerson College for her fellowship studies, and I’m looking forward to working with her during her time on campus,” said President Lee Pelton, who will be one of Way’s primary mentors during her yearlong fellowship. “I hope she finds the experience valuable for her career path in higher education, and I welcome the distinctive perspective she brings as an ACE Fellow participant—one that can provide an opportunity for me and my colleagues to gain new insights about our own institution and higher education in general.”

Emerson’s own associate professor of visual and media arts Robert Sabal will also be an ACE Fellow this year.
