When Emerson College announced that Anchorman 2 would be premiering exclusively for its students, it was kind of a big deal.

The sequel to the original Anchorman debuted at the AMC Loews Boston Common Theater on the evening of December 4 to a massive crowd—with students lining up three hours early on Tremont Street for a chance to watch it.

Earlier in the day, actor Will Ferrell was in full character as Anchorman 2’s Ron Burgundy when he held a packed press conference in the Semel Theater. Emerson renamed its School of Communication the “Ron Burgundy School of Communication” for just one day to honor Burgundy’s visit.

“I got the tickets the second they emailed me. I went and printed them out just in case, which ended up being a good thing.” said Tiffany Herholtz ’14, a Communication Studies major.

Lucky students in one theater got a chance to see Ferrell himself. The funnyman spoke to the audience in one of the screening rooms before the film began.

Vouchers for theater admittance were gone within hours of becoming available earlier in the week. Students had to download and print a free ticket for first-come, first-serve entry.

The demand for tickets was so high that many students began asking around for extras their peers might not need.

“I got an email that they were sold out and I started freaking out.  I started going on all the Emerson groups to see if anybody was giving away spare tickets,” said Jamie Bradley ’15, a Marketing Communication major.

Bradley luckily found a friend with a ticket, but even those with a ticket weren’t guaranteed access. Moviegoers were taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once the three theaters were filled, remaining Anchorman fans had to be turned away.

Nick Dumont ’14, a Journalism major, knew students who lined up “at 3:30. When I got here around 4:00, there were already about 150 people upstairs, and at least 100 downstairs,”

Tim O’Brien ’14, a Writing, Literature, and Publishing major, came to the theater at 4:30 when lines began stretching outside.

“I was kind of stressed. I knew there were three theaters, but I know Emerson kids are crazy about this,” said O’Brien.

Despite the lines, though, students never lost their enthusiasm.

“We are a film school. I love Anchorman and I obviously love Will Ferrell. I’ve been watching him since I was 13,” said Herholtz.

“I think it’s awesome that President [Lee] Pelton organized this for the students. I feel so lucky to be an Emerson student right now. I’ve been waiting nine years to see this movie, “ said Dumont.

So now that they’ve seen the movie, O’Brien knows there’s only one more thing every Ron Burgundy School of Communication student needs.

“I really need a Ron Burgundy School of Communication T-shirt.”
