A cable news network in Washington State that has an Emerson alumnus in a key staff position recently won a Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism in the Local Cable Station category.

Charles Trillingham, MA ’05, is an executive producer at Northwest Cable News (NWCN), which received the Cronkite award for its coverage of the 2012 presidential election.

The award is bestowed annually by the Norman Lear Center at the University of Southern California’s School for Communication and Journalism.

NWCN is the nation’s second-largest regional cable news network, reaching more than 2.9 million subscribers in five western states.

Judges described the network’s “Race to the Wire” half-hour specials as a “political junkie’s dream,” according to a press release. They also praised NWCN’s use of social media to engage viewers in conversations about local and national elections, along with its innovative production techniques and analysis-heavy coverage.

Six “Race to the Wire” specials aired in the spring, covering every aspect of the Republican primaries, as well as the caucuses and primaries held in each northwestern state. In the final nine weeks of the campaign, 17 “Race to the Wire” specials were aired.

The network was additionally recognized for its election night coverage that included updates and insight from a non-partisan polling expert; a “Google Plus Hangout” in which voters asked questions of the Washington Democratic Party chair; allowing viewers to ask questions through Twitter and Facebook of the Washington Republican Party chair; and providing a voter’s guide to the Washington governor’s race with each candidate’s answers to the same five questions.
