Emerson College

Services

The Media Services Center (MSC) provides the following resources and services to the Emerson College community:

Circulating Audio Visual Equipment

Data projectors, computer laptops, portable video equipment, digital still cameras, audio recorders, slide and 16mm projectors, projection screens, and overhead projectors, circulate to members of the Emerson community who have current, valid Emerson IDs. For questions concerning reservation requests call the MSC circulation desk 617.824.8676.

Portable video equipment is for use by students in non-production courses. Students enrolled in production courses are expected to use the equipment provided by the TRF Equipment Distribution Center (EDC).

Classroom Deliveries

MSC delivers equipment to faculty for use in classes on campus if equipment is not permanently installed in the classroom. MSC staff do not deliver videotapes, or small, easily carried items.  For questions concerning reservation requests call the MSC circulation desk 617.824.8676.

Classroom and Event Support

MSC is responsible for providing and maintaining equipment used in the College's classrooms and meeting spaces, but NOT in production curriculum facilities or dedicated computer facilities. The hardware we provide ranges from simple overhead projectors to high-end data projectors. Please note that equipment and labor used for non-course related events are charged back to departments and student groups. Questions concerning equipment availability and operation can be addressed to any member of our staff. (617-824-8676) Questions or comments regarding equipment purchases should be directed to Head of Media Services Cheryl Schaffer at 617.824.8406.

The MSC staff is happy to provide on-location, hands-on training in equipment use. MSC can also provide equipment operators for high-profile and/or highly-technical events.

Production

MSC provides a number of audio/visual production services on a charge-back basis. These include radio and television off-air taping, audio and video duplication, video capture and editing, video format transfer (including pal/secam to NTSC and Beta dubbing), and slide generation. All production work is done within the restrictions of copyright legislation.

Along with our regular video duplication services, we provide service that will digitize video material for faculty members. This material can be uploaded to the Emerson online media library,  Median.

Production requests should be directed to Elbert Lee at 617.824.8676.

In-House use

The MSC houses a number of facilities that are open to all members of the Emerson Community. These include a video studio with videoconference capabilities, 2 Final Cut Pro editing suites, 6 individual computer production suites for creating different types of multimedia, and a conference room. For questions concerning facility availability and for reservation requests call the MSC circulation desk 617.824.8676.

Service to assist students completing multi-media projects

MSC staff members will be available to work one-on-one with students who need assistance integrating media into their course assignments. This new service takes into account that students have different levels of computer literacy and may need assistance in using the technology required in their coursework. Students may make an appointment to use online tutorials on their own or work directly with staff members who will assist them in working with software to complete their assignments.
