INTERNSHIPS
Internships are typically one-time work or service experiences related to the student’s major or career goal. The internship plan generally involves students working in professional settings under the supervision and monitoring of practicing professionals. Internships can be paid or unpaid and the student may or may not receive academic credit for performing the internship.
A major difference is that credit bearing internships have specific academic requirements and involve enrollment in a semester-long course. The internship must happen over the course of 12 weeks between the first and last day of classes. A two credit internship (available to graduate students only) is a commitment of 8-15 hours per week, a four credit is 16-24 hours, and an eight credit is 32-38 hours per week. In order to be eligible to receive credit a student must be a junior, senior or graduate student in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.7 or above. To pursue an internship for credit, a student must complete an approval process and paperwork with the College prior to the start of the semester. While Career Services manages this approval process, the academic department will review the proposed internship to determine if it meets departmental guidelines. For each semester, there is a deadline for internship registration. See the Academic Calendar for specific dates.
