Library Instruction FAQ

Q. What is library instruction?

A. Using online and in-class learning experiences, we tailor instruction sessions to meet your learning goals. Aside from helping students write research papers, we will create a session tailored to your assignment. Check out some of the possible sessions and activities used in other classes:

  • For a theater class, students researched historical, social, and political references from a play;
  • For a writing class, students annotated their bibliographies to evaluate their resources;
  • For an Institute class, students used primary sources to examine historical context.

Q. Where does the library instruction take place?

A. Usually, in the library’s classroom. A librarian can also come to your class, or work with you to create assignments that get students to use library resources.

Q. How do I schedule a session for my class?

A. Please fill out the Instruction Session Request Form and a librarian will get in touch with you to set up a time.

Q. Do I have to attend the session?

A. Yes! Your participation is vital to the success of the library class and you are expected to attend the class with your students. Library instruction is most successful when students are already working on a research assignment. Effective library instruction helps students meet real and tangible learning goals.

Q. When is the best time to schedule a session?

A. Library sessions work best when they are integrated into the curriculum and match students’ needs for a particular assignment. This way, students immediately put their new knowledge of information resources to use. We will do our best to partner with you to make a learning experience for your class.

Q. Who do I contact if I have more questions?

A. Contact Nicole Brown (Nicole_Brown@emerson.edu), if you have any questions about the library instruction program, or want to collaborate with a librarian.
