Databases and Indexes
The following indexes will help you identify journal articles. If you need help constructing your search, ask a librarian for assistance or refer to How to Search Databases.
PsycINFO
Articles on psychology and behavior back to 1887. There is no full text, but many of the journals are here at Emerson. Combining PsycINFO with PsycARTICLES for your search will link you to full text of any articles that are in journals published by the American Psychological Association.
Communication and Mass Media Complete
Citations and full text of an extremely wide range of articles in communication journals. This is an excellent resource for any communication-related research
Grove Dictionary of Art
A web encyclopedia, with links to many other sites, including images. Search .
Academic Search Premier and Expanded Academic ASAP
Good multidisciplinary databases that include the arts and social sciences.
To request articles or other materials that the Emerson library does not own, follow the instructions on the Request from Other Libraries screen. Databases are available only to members of the Emerson College community and may be accessed on-campus or through the proxy server. If you have problems connecting to Library databases from off-campus, refer to Accessing Library Resources from Off-Campus.
Scholarly Journals
Choosing articles from the best scholarly journals is especially important for this class. There are hundreds of psychology journals published, and sifting out the best ones can be particularly challenging. Excellent journals to look for include:
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology
Journal of Nonverbal Behavior
Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin
Basic and Applied Social Psychology
Journal of Experimental Psychology
Developmental Psychology
Child Development
Media Psychology
Communication Research
Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology
Psychological Review
Psychological Bulletin
American Psychologist
Psychological Science
Current Directions
Advances in Experimental Social Psychology
Psychological Reports
Perceptual and Motor Skills
Sex Roles
Emerson maintains long runs of print copies of many of these journals, and many are available electronically in full text as well. Browse through them on the shelves and use the online databases to identify articles related to your topic. Use the Full-text Finder to find out which ones are available to you online.
Books in the Library Catalog
Use the Library Catalog to locate books, periodical titles, and media materials. The Emerson Library is part of the Fenway Libraries Online (FLO), which means we share a catalog with nine other area libraries, including four art libraries. You may find materials at other schools in your search results; if you would like to borrow something held at another library, ask a librarian about Requesting from Other Libraries.
If you search the catalog by subject, it is important to remember that the catalog requires exact Library of Congress subject headings. If you do not find material under the heading you entered, it does not necessarily mean there are no books in our collection on your topic. You may simply not have guessed the "official" subject heading. Try searching by Keyword, or ask a librarian for suggestions. Following are selected subject headings related to this course.
Face
Physiognomy
Appearance
Beauty
Interpersonal attraction
Political cartoons
If you do a Keyword search for a multi-word phrase, remember to put the phrase in quotation marks. Here are some sample Keyword searches:
"plastic surgery"
propaganda and images
beauty and "interpersonal attraction"

- How frequently is a site updated?
- Has it won awards?
- Is the information accurate, to the best of your knowledge?
- How much advertising does the site or journal contain?
