Other Speech Books and Recordings in the Library

There are hundreds of books of speeches at the Library. Titles such as The Art of the Impossible, a collection of speeches by Czech President and playwright Vaclav Havel, can be useful for finding a great speech. Try a keyword or subject search for the word "speeches," or a more complex search like "speeches and women" (don't actually type in the parentheses). In the Media Collection, you can also find collections of recorded speeches on video:

  • Great Speeches, volumes I-IV (V 693 A-D)
  • Great Speeches of the 20th Century, volumes I-IV and supplement [CD] PN6161.G74 1991

The Library Catalog includes Emerson College Library's holdings for books, journals and audiovisual materials. Please note that the catalog is shared with 8 other members of the Fenway Libraries Online (FLO) consortium, which means you can see items from these libraries in your search results. If you would like to borrow an item from one of these libraries, you can either go to the library yourself and check the book out with your Emerson ID card, or you can fill out an online request form and have it delivered to the Emerson College Library for you.

Speech Index and Speech Index Supplement [X] PN6121.S98 1966 and 1980Speech Index Communism Example
These two volumes in the reference collection index a wide variety of books, magazines, journals, government documents, and congressional hearings, from the earliest times through 1980. Above is an example of an entry from Speech Index.  Speeches are indexed by subject and by speaker.  Under the topic "Communism" we find several speeches, including these by John Foster Dulles.  The first speech is called "Freedom or despotism?"  If you turn to the front of the book, you see that the code BA indicates Baird, Albert Craig, the compiler for the series Representative American Speeches, mentioned above.  With that information, you can look up the book in the catalog to get the call number. This speech is on page 25 of the 1956-57 volume.
