Circulation and Scheduling Policies

The Video Collection

Videos circulate only to instructors for class use or for preview.  Videos for class may be borrowed by instructors or by their representatives (for example, a student enrolled in a class or a graduate assistant); however, if an instructor wants someone else to pick up the video, the instructor must call or email ahead of time to authorize the representative.  Students may borrow these materials briefly, for class presentations only, and must have the authorization of their instructor.

Videos circulate for 3 days.  Longer loans may be approved by full-time staff.  Although we do not charge fines for overdue materials, borrowers who do not return them on time risk losing their borrowing privileges, as other instructors may be planning to use these materials in their own classes.

Students may access these materials in-house during normal operating hours.

Audiocassettes and CDs follow the same loan policies as books. See Library Circulation policies.

In-house Viewing/Listening Facilities

Individual Viewing Rooms

Five viewing rooms are available for one or two person collection access.  These rooms are equipped with VHS/DVD/CD playback equipment.

Media Research/Preview Room:

A small group space is available for use by faculty to research and preview media materials.  The room provides a quiet space and is equipped with a table, an LCD monitor, DVD and VHS players.  When not used for research or previewing, this room is available for small group listening/viewing.  Because of its size and location, the Research/Preview room is not appropriate for use by classes.

Studio Viewing Room:

The 30 seat studio viewing room may be scheduled for classes or campus groups using media.  When not used for larger group viewing, the room may be used for 16mm film viewing or small group viewing.

Media Acquisition

I. To ensure that the materials you request are ready for you when you need them, we ask that you submit nonprint requests by the following dates:

August 20 for the fall semester;

December 20 for the spring semester; and

April 20 for summer sessions.

After those deadlines, we will try our best to get materials, but we encourage you to order by the above dates to assure prompt and efficient service.

II. To achieve a fair distribution of funds among the departments, the Media Services Center will set aside a percentage of the nonprint budget for each academic department based on that department’s nonprint circulation the previous year. In other words, if the faculty and students in a particular department accounted for 10 per cent of the nonprint circulation last year, that department can spend at least 10 per cent of the nonprint budget the following year.

III. Requests for individual items costing over $150.00 will require approval by the instructor's departmental chair.
