
Laptops in the Library
The Emerson College Library provides laptop computers for full-time Emerson students, faculty, and staff to use within the Library. These laptops are loaded with Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Internet Explorer as the Web browser. Check one out at the Reserve Desk in the Library.
Want to use your own laptop/notebook in the Library?
You can use the same network configuration you use in your residence hall. Instructions for configuring your computer are available from the Help Desk page. If you need help on configuring your laptop for the Emerson network, go to the Help Desk (4th Floor, 120 Boylston St.), phone 617-824-8080.
Policy on Use of Library Laptops
- Library Laptops Do Not Leave the Library.
- Do not leave the laptop unattended at any time.
- You are financially liable for loss of or damage to the laptop computers. If any damage or loss occurs, you will be charged accordingly for it. You must sign a waiver form at the time of check out accepting full responsibility for the laptop. No food or drink is allowed when using a laptop.
- Sign up at the Reserve Desk to use the laptops. You may reserve a time in person or over the phone. Use of the laptops is open to anyone with a valid Emerson College ID card. This does not include Fenway Library Consortium users, Emerson Alumni borrowers, or Department of Professional Studies and Special Programs students. You must present your Emerson ID card when checking out a laptop.
- Laptop computers are to be used on the 3rd Floor of the Walker Building only. If there is a problem with a laptop, you should return it to the Reserve Desk and explain the problem.
- In order to provide maximum access to the laptops, you will be limited to reserving one two-hour period per day. If you are more than 15 minutes late in picking up a reserved laptop, you will lose your entire reserved time if someone else is waiting to use the laptop.
- You are responsible for returning the laptop computer on time. You will be charged for a laptop that is returned or renewed past the due time. Charges will accrue at $1.00 per hour, after the laptop is due.
- You may download files to the floppy disk drive (A) only with a PC formatted floppy disk.
- Printing is available from the laptops. In the print queue at the print workstations, the user will be listed as library_patron for these laptops. Printing costs $0.07 per page and requires ECcash or print credits.
- You may not attach other hardware (laptops, CD-ROM drives, printers, etc.) to the laptops, with the exception of USB flash drives. You may not install your own software, or change system settings.
- Neither the Library nor the College is responsible for damage to any floppy disk, computer, or for any loss of data, damage, or liability that may occur from use of the Library's computers or malfunctioning Library hardware or software.
- The laptops may not be used for illegal activities. The laptops may not be used to interfere with or disrupt other users, services, or equipment. Disruptions include, but are not limited to, harassment, distribution of unsolicited advertising, propagation of computer viruses, or attempts to make unauthorized entry to other computers.
