Marilene Phipps

Haitian Pastorale by Marilene PhippsAltars and Shrines of Haiti, Natural and Man-made, is the theme of Marilene Phipps' art exhibit on display at the library through the Fall 2001 semester. Inspired by her childhood in Haiti, Marilene talks about her art. "The overtones of my work have to do with promoting the knowledge, appreciation and respect of Haitian culture, showing the inherent universality of religious needs and beliefs. The undertones of the work deal with addressing issues of negative stereotypes about Vodou, and the problems of racism and negative racial identity fostered by these stereotypes."
