INB: Problems with Mac OS and Font Size

M. Fong Tan

This seems to be a known problem with Java which works in conjuction with web broswers such as Firefox and Safari for Mac OS X.  Information Technology has contacted SunGard Higher Ed regarding this problem.  In the meantime, here are some temporary solutions for viewing comfort:

  1. Always keep your computer updated and secure by downloading Software Updates

You can check for updates under Apple/Software Update. Software updates, such as those for Java J2SE, improves the reliability and compatiability of software on your computer.  Installing Software Updates, in general, also keeps your computer secure.

  2. Turn on Smooth All Text in Java Applets to help readability:

    1. Close all open windows and web browsers.
    2. In the Finder, click on your hard disk icon.
    3. Double-click on your Applications folder.
    4. Double-click on Utilities.

    5. Depending on which version of OS X you have installed:

Double-click on the Java folder.  Double-click the J2SE 5.0 folder.  Double-click Java Preferences.  In the General tab, check Smooth text in Java applets.  Click Save.

      or

Double-click on Java Preferences.  In the General tab, click J2SE 5.0 to select it and click Options.  Check Smooth text in Java applets.  Click OK.

Close the Java Peferences Window.   Restart your browser.

  3. You can also temporarily increase the font size by altering your display resolution while in an INB session:

To do this, click the Apple menu and select System Preferences.  Click Displays under Hardware.   Note your current setting in case you want to revert to it later.

To optimize viewing in INB, change the resolution to 1024 X 768 or lower.  If available, check the option Show displays in menu bar.  You will see a Display icon on the menu bar from which you can change the resolution.  Or return to Apple/System Preferences to change your Display setting.

We want to hear if this worked for you. Please email: Fong Tan.
