Classroom Opinion Polls

Use of classroom opinion polls are growing in higher education. While inspiring class discussion, a poll can give students a place to express their view on an issue and help them consider the views of others. An online poll gives students privacy to honestly express an opinion without anxiety and time to formulate a strong argument for their viewpoint, which ultimately sets the stage for meaningful in-classroom discussion.

Here are some resources which discuss the impact of polls and give guidelines for their use:

Classroom Opinion Poll  A quick guide to using a poll to assess awareness of attitudes & values, written by the Faculty Center for Innovative Teaching at Central Michigan University. The guide gives an overview of poll use, procedure to create and use a poll, and examples of polls.

Using On-going Student Feedback to Increase Teaching Effectiveness and Student Learning An essay by Karron G. Lewis, Ph.D. of the University of Texas at Austin Division of Instructional Innovation and Assessment, which outlines the benefit of using polls to gauge student feedback throughout the semester and adjust teaching accordingly.

Web Poll Tool This site, provided by Edith Cowan University offers ideas for using web poll in teaching, and sample polls.
