Deirdre Conlon
Scholar-In-Residence (2007)
B.A., Trinity College, Dublin; M.A., City University of New York; M.Phil., City University of New York, Graduate Center; Ph.D., City University of New York, Graduate Center

Deirdre Conlon's dissertation examined intersections between the French social theorist Henri Lefebvre's writings on everyday life, social space and contemporary productions of the nation-state, and the experiences of migrant women who are refugees and asylum seekers in modern Irish society. She is currently completing a number of journal articles drawn from this research.
Her publications include: Embodying the Nation-State through the Social and Spatial Practices of Migrant Women in Contemporary Ireland (forthcoming) in B. Dominquez Garcia and A. Pérez (eds.) Gendering Citizenship and Globalization; Productive Bodies, Performative Spaces: Everyday Life in Christopher Park (2004) in the journal Sexualities; and Spaces of Motherhood (2003), in the online journal Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture.
With research interests in the geopolitics of migration, citizenship and social exclusion, in the coming year Deirdre's plans include a 'countertopography' of various immigrant groups experiences in the 'new' Ireland and a project examining shifting practices and the changing role of religion in Irish society associated with recent migration trends.
Deirdre has taught Urban Studies at Hunter College, CUNY, in New York and Feminist Geography at Trinity College Dublin, in Ireland. In addition to teaching, she has completed fellowships as a communications/curriculum consultant and writing fellow at CUNY and has several years experience in multi-disciplinary social science research studies on health and aging.
