Crucial Conversations (book)

A seven-step approach to handling difficult conversations with confidence and skill. "Crucial" conversations are interpersonal exchanges at work or at home that we dread having but know we cannot avoid. How do you say what needs to be said while avoiding an argument with a boss, child, or relationship partner? This book offers readers a proven seven-point strategy for achieving their goals in all those emotionally, psychologically, or legally charged situations that can arise in their professional and personal lives. Based on the authors' DialogueSmart training seminars, the techniques are geared toward getting people to lower their defenses, creating mutual respect and understanding, increasing emotional safety, and encouraging freedom of expression. What Great Managers Do (article) 

According to consultant and speaker on leadership and management practices Marcus Buckingham, average managers and great managers are differentiated by their ability to identify and utilize each employee’s unique strengths and skill sets. Where average managers might believe all employees have the same motivators and shape them to fit their assigned roles, great managers understand that there is diversity in contribution, needs, and learning styles, and adjust roles accordingly to maximize employee growth.

“Great managers know and value the unique abilities and even the eccentricities of their employees, and they learn how best to integrate them into a coordinated plan of attack,” Buckingham says.

What Great Managers Do” talks about finding an employee’s strengths, using triggers for said strengths, and tailoring managerial coaching to an employee’s learning style to encourage higher performance.
