Welcome to Wellness at Emerson, the College’s wellness initiative! Our objective is to help you to be happy, healthy, and productive in your work life and at home, and to help you increase your financial fitness and intellectual wellness, too! Detailed below, please see our list of wellness offerings for 2016.

  • emerson walks

    Emerson Walks, Wednesdays, 12 pm

    Emerson Walks is a fun opportunity to join your peers within the Emerson community for a 45-minute walk on Wednesdays during the spring, summer and fall. The alternating routes for each walk are sent to interested walkers prior to each session and include walks to the Waterfront, Faneuil Hall, Charles River, Beacon Hill, the Public Garden and Commonwealth Avenue. The group meets inside the front lobby of the Little Building at noon. Our first walk this spring will be on Wednesday, April 6. Please contact Tricia Kennedy (tricia_kennedy@emerson.edu) if you wish to be added to the Emerson Walks mailing list.

  • Weight Watchers

    Weight Watchers On-Site, Tuesdays, 12 pm

    A 12-week on-site Weight Watchers program is running from late May through August, 2016. Meetings are on Tuesdays from 12–12:45 pm in the Department of Transportation Conference Rooms 5 & 6, on the 2nd floor of the Transportation Building (same floor as Emerson's Human Resources Department). There is a $156 fee for participation; prorated for late entrants. Up to $150 may be reimbursable to employees enrolled in Emerson’s medical plans.   • HR yoga and sunset

    Yoga for Beginners Program, Five Tuesdays starting March 8, 12 pm

    This five-week program of one-hour yoga sessions is geared to employees new to yoga. Concepts and principles are reviewed and personalized instruction in breathing, movement and yoga poses are taught. In this program, provided by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, participants will gain a greater understanding of the varioius forms of yoga and how to incorporate it into their lives. Please bring a large towel or mat, water, and wear comfortable loose clothing. The session will take place in the Cabaret on the ground floor of the Little Building. The first session is on Tuesday, March 8.

  • Credit score concept

    Understanding Your Credit Report & Score, Wednesday, March 9, 12 pm

    This seminar, provided through Metro Credit Union, will focus on understanding your FICO Score including: understanding the content of credit reports, how information is collected, who has access to reports, and how to use and manage credit to build a positive history. The seminar will take place in the Beard Room, 2nd floor of the Little Building.

    Pre-Retirement Planning Seminars, Three Tuesdays starting March 29, 5 pm

    It's not too early to start thinking about your retirement. You may not be ready to retire now, but when you are you will want to be prepared. Discover Harvard Pilgrim's Celebrating 65 Program, which can help you take a proactive approach to retirement and plan for a healthy future. This program includes three one-hour seminars offered on three separate evenings: Making Sense of Social Security (March 29); Simplifying Medicare (April 12); and Retirement & Health Care (April 26). All three seminars take place in the Human Resources Conference Room, 2nd floor of the Transportation Building, 8 Park Plaza. Spouses and partners (registered) are invited to attend these seminars as well.

    Home Buying Workshop, Wednesday, April 13, 12 pm

    At this workshop, a representative from The Mortgage Network will discuss the climate of the current real estate market, the mortgage process, including how and why to get pre-approved, and how to best position yourself for success in a competitive bidding environment. The workshop will be held in the Beard Room, on the second floor of the Little Building.

    A representative from The Mortgage Network will also be on site, by appointment, on Wednesday, April 20, for one-to-one sessions for those who are not able to attend the workshop on April 13. At these sessions, you can get answers to your personal mortgage questions, as well as a quick prequalification analysis. Sign up for a one-to-one session on April 20.

  • Vegetables

    Plant-Based Eating Made Easy & Tasty, Wednesday, May 11, 12 pm

    A plant-based eating style helps lower your risk of many diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, cancer and high-blood pressure. This seminar, provided by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, looks at practical ways to incorporate more plant-based foods into your menu planning, shopping, and cooking routine. Various types of vegetarian eating styles will also be discussed. The seminar will be held in the Beard Room, on the 2nd floor of the Little Building.

    Walk in the Arboretum, Friday, June 10, 1 pm

    On Friday, June 10, Emerson Walks will host a guided walking tour of the Arnold Arboretum. Registration will be on a first come basis to this event (35 limit for tour).  The duration of this trip is estimated at 3 hours including transportation; we will take public transportation to the Arboretum.

    Foam Roller Stretching, Thursday, September 22, 12 pm

    Stretching is very beneficial and cannot be neglected. But in the case of muscle knots, stretching alone is not enough. The most cost-effective way to eliminate and prevent muscle knots is the foam roller—a firm foam log that is six inches in diameter. This program, provided by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, will introduce the foam roller and show you how to properly use it to treat various muscle aches and pains as well as utilizing it for spinal stabilization exercises. Please wear comfortable loose clothing. The session will take place in the MultiPurpose Room, on the 1st floor of the Campus Center, 150 Boylston Street.

    Taking Care of Aging Parents, Wednesday, October 5, 12 pm

    For individuals facing the difficult situation of caring for their parents, the decisions seem endless. This seminar, provided by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, will help establish goals for your elderly loved ones, and will discuss the realities of reaching these goals. This seminar will be held in the Beard Room, on the 2nd floor of the Little Building.

    Open Enrollment Benefits Fair, Thursday, November 3, 10 am to 2 pm

    The 2016 Open Enrollment Benefits Fair will be held in the Bordy Theatre on Thursday, November 3. This year’s theme will be “Pathways to Health & Wellness." More details will be provided in October concerning the fair. (Registration is not required for this event).

    Fitting Fitness In, Monday, November 7, 12 pm

    Learn how to include fitness into your daily life at this seminar. The seminar will help you develop a personal action plan. Topics will include the benefits and barriers, readiness to exercise, and making time. This program is presented by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, and will be held in the Beard Room, on the second floor of the Little Building.

    All staff and faculty who attend at least one session of 4 different programs during 2016 will be eligible for a raffle to win one of the following prizes:

    First Prize: $500 Gift Card to Great Wolf Lodge OR Wachusett Mountain OR REI
    Second Prize: $250 Gift Card to Modell's Sporting Goods OR Dick's Sporting Goods
    Third Prize: $100 Gift Card to Whole Foods

    Eligibility will be based on attendance lists at the events. The drawing for prizes will occur in December and prize winners notified prior to intersession.

    All prizes are subject to IRS rules on reporting of income. The prize winners must provide their name and EID information to accept their prize. Tax gross-ups will not be provided associated with these prizes.
